This is Mayhem's second EP and the first studio recordings of the band after the murder of original guitarist, Euronymous. The music is quite a bit different from their masterpiece, "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" due to the fact that the then-new guitarist Blasphemer wrote all (or most) of the music on this album (and every album thereafter) .
Everything has gotten more technical, brutal, and faster. Vocalist Maniac had improved by the time he returned to Mayhem for this recording.. not the best vocals, but still better than the clean vocals he would later use on "Grand Declaration of War". The guitars are very saturated, but also very black metal.. And it has been said that Euronymous himself did write a couple of the riffs involved in some of the songs, which seems about right, since you can definitely hear the late guitarist's influence. Although the style used is much more technical and dissonant.. The drums are very technical and triggered sounding, which became sort of a trend for the Hellhammer for awhile.. brutal performance, for sure. The bass guitar is there and adds to the carnage, but doesnt really stand out on any of the tracks..
One of the best releases by the infamous black metal band... An instant addiction..
